Environmental education and raising public awareness among students

18.10.2024

Today, the importance of protecting nature has never been greater.
Ecology and environmental awareness begin with young generations.
Pelister National Park continues with environmental education and raising public awareness among students about nature protection, developing positive ecological practices and behavior in nature.

Students from the Gjorgi Sugarev Primary School: Olivera Shikleska-Grozdanova, Susana Ristevska and Frosina Jankoska.
Educators: Violeta Sotirovska and Elena Jima Terzievska.

Through play we learned about:
– who lives in Pelister National Park
– we learned what is in the Infocenter
– we explored in nature
-we observed insects under a microscope
– we discovered the colors in nature
-chasing for eco trophies
Our goal is for students to become ambassadors of environmental awareness, transferring the acquired knowledge and practices to their families and friends. By fully integrating ecological principles into everyday life, we create a better and more sustainable future for everyone.

Harmonising Practices in the Vrtška Forest of Pelister National Park

04.10.2024

Pelister National Park, in accordance with Nature Protection Law, has developed a new Management Plan for Pelister National Park for the period of 2021-2025. PONT (Prespa and Ohrid Nature Trust Fund) financially supported the creation of the plan.

The new Management Plan foresees, among other things, the improvement of the management of forest areas. This will be based on an ecosystem approach and adaptation of forest practices in accordance with ecological processes and models.

With this in mind, a “Guide for the management of forests in NP Pelister” was developed to provide guidelines for the future management of forest ecosystems. This introduces a new practice, moving the understanding of forests as “a natural resource in the National Park” to “ecosystems that support high biological diversity and provide a multitude of ecosystem services”, and of its management, which until now has been predominantly an economic use of forests, will now move to a management of forest ecosystems approach.

In order to introduce new, more modern and environmentally acceptable management practices, a long-term plan (2020-2040) has been drawn up. This incorporated activities and years of realisation of beech forest plantations from shoots (vegetative origin) and its translation into plantations from seed (generative) origin from stem native species on an area of 46.85 hectares, ward 20, in SSE Vrtushka. The plan was developed by forestry and ecology consultants, which represents a new model of activities that will be applied in the Pelister National Park. The following is provided for:
Harmonisation of forest management practices and introduction of new more modern and environmentally acceptable practices and principles in forest management.

Damaged cameras on “Prevalec” from where the national park “Pelister” Bitola monitors the Baba Planina for the detection and prevention of fires

03.09.2024

“Pelister” National Park from Bitola, that is, the services that work in the institution – the ranger service, states that part of the equipment that serves to monitor and alert a possible fire in the part of Pelister is damaged.

It is about damage to the cameras with which they monitor the mountain, and these cameras are networked in their server and with the Ministry of Defense.

-At the “Prevalec” location, in a very strategic place from where almost the whole of Pelister can be observed, two cameras have been installed that serve for observation and early detection of fires, during a regular inspection by the ranger, yesterday, he discovered that part of the equipment was damaged. The boxes are damaged and we assume that instruments and other equipment, and instruments and tools, have been removed. The case was reported to the police, teams of the “Pelister” National Park were sent to the spot, and from there a report was made to the police where the damage will be ascertained, an inspection and a report made, says Zoran Projchevski, forestry engineer. The national park is horrified by the damage and doesn’t want to guess what could happen if the cameras don’t work.

The director of NP “Pelister”, Malic Semshedini says:

– We acted and reported the case to the police in order to discover the perpetrators and we will file a criminal complaint against an unknown perpetrator. We don’t want what happened in other national parks in the country and in the neighborhood to happen to us. The equipment is ours, acquired through the “Prevent” project and is very important for fire protection in the Pelister National Park. The equipment is connected to a server and to the Ministry of Defense. So far we have managed to manage all the smaller fires that have appeared and for that we are especially proud as a team at NP Pelister.

The national park is appealing to find the perpetrators as soon as possible, to put the equipment into operation and to establish monitoring on the mountain, because we all know the damages caused by the fires throughout the country this summer.
